This will be a public presentation and review process where you will receive criticism and approval to move forward on development. These presentations will occur on November 20 and November 23, each team will produce a PowerPoint presentation that will be a maximum of 10 minutes each. You are to present your product, generate a strategy for development, create a timeline for completion and develop a task roster for each team member.

The final presentation will include the following deliverables:

1. Website [describing your product]

2. Printed material [poster and brochure], including literature (text) to support your product.

Assignment 0.2 | Haptic Modeling

Part I | Modeling

You are to create a series of gestural models related to the topics; rhythm, structure and melody. These models are intuitive models that are quick and responsive to the topic. The selection of materials is very important. You will need to establish some degree of correlation between words and materials. Be creative and not obvious. Avoid all temptation to stop and judge what you are doing. Instead engage in the making fully with your body and mind. You should produce at least 5 total haptic models for each topic.

You are to relate the models to the recent documentary on techno music, Modulations: Cinema for the Ear.

Your haptic models are to be created out of recycled material. The key component to this modeling is to acquire a hot glue gun. Be creative in your selection of materials and work to layer materials to create interesting compositions.

Part II | Photo Capture of Haptic Models

Proceed to photograph your models. Document the model and obtain design rich (i.e. charged with layered spatial potential) images. Obtain enough pictures to allow for multiple readings of the model. Unexpected views often are the most rewarding. Avoid easy and obvious takes. Photograph these models on different settings, in different lighting and avoid grounding the model in space.

Capture digitally several images (at least 15 per model) that you find searching for tectonics, light and space. Keep all images on a library on your computer and load six of your
best images onto your blog.

Weekly Blog

Every student will create a blog on blogger.com. This will be your own catalog for submission in a weekly journal. You are to submit one hand drawn sketch and two other entries (3 minimum) every week throughout the semester. These entries could be links to websites, inspiring images (document your sources) or any material that you find important relating to film and digital media. A written component to each entry should be included documenting why this is important to your education both in this class and in this program.

This will be due Monday of the incoming week throughout the semester.

* this is to be an academic (not personal) blog. All students will maintain the highest ethical standards in their blog. Any misuse (see ITS computer usage policy) will be cause for withdrawal from class.

Examples:

This an hand drawn sketch and digital file from a competition project that I worked on a few years back. The project entitled "Fluid Space" begins to address the fluidity of both physical and virtual space present in our environment today. You can see this work documented on my firms web site: http://hybridenvironments.com

This course will be taught in a lecture format introducing topics and initiating a series of assignments to be done on the computer. The class will incorporate an interactive laboratory (Fridays), initiate group discussions and formulate critiques of work.

Process:

Through a series of exercises we will engage in understanding visualization, interactive media, digital film and computer-modeling principals. Topics will be demonstrated through weekly examples, and executed by the student as digital formulations. We will formulate a methodology for working in digital design and output several projects throughout the semester to demonstrate skill development.

Course Objectives

· Integrate digital design as a primary design tool

· Understand three dimensional environments

· Understand the potential of raster and vector graphics

· Introduce principals of interactive design

· Explore basic animated principals

· Explore digital film editing
